Fasting
Bible study on fasting.

Matt. 4:2

Jesus fasted.

Fasting is voluntary abstinence from food. In the First Century, Christians fasted in conjunction with prayer.


Matt. 6:16-18


Jesus taught the disciples to fast in secret.


Lk. 5:33-35


Jesus' apostles did not fast like John's disciples because they had the bridegroom (i.e., Jesus) with them. But, they would fast when the bridegroom was taken away.

Today, we are married to Jesus (Rom. 7:4-6).


Matt. 17:14-21


During Jesus' earthly ministry, His disciples could only perform some miracles with fasting a prayer.


Acts 13:1-2


In Antioch, prophets and teachers fasted.


Acts 13:3


The church in Antioch sent Paul and Barnabas on their first missionary journey with fasting and prayer.


Acts 14:23

Paul and Barnabas prayed with fasting in appointing elders.

In the First Century, Christians employed fasting to aid in their prayers.


1 Cor. 7:5


A married couple is not to deprive each other of due affection except by consent for a time, to devote themselves to fasting and prayer.


2 Cor. 6:4-10

In part, Paul (and others) commended themselves to the Lord in fastings (cf. 2 Cor. 11:27).
